HUNTSVILLE — Law enforcement agencies across North Alabama are urging motorists to travel with caution as subfreezing temperatures and snow are creating hazardous driving conditions.
The National Weather Service’s Huntsville office issued a Winter Weather Advisory that was due to expire at 7 p.m.
Light and moderate snow will move out of Northwest Alabama over the next few hours, the Weather Service said. The snow will affect areas through 7 p.m. and locations further east before moving out of the area
Slick roadways will be the primary concern due to black ice.
Several major highways and roads have been closed in the area.
In Huntsville, the elevated portions and overpasses of Memorial Parkway have been shut down. Police have also closed Cecil Ashburn Road and Bankhead Parkway.
Morgan County Sheriff’s Department has closed U.S. 231 north near the new bridge. Motorists are should use Union Hill Road and Alabama 36 as a detour.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Department said Keel Mountain Road and the south end of Green Mountain Road are closed due to icy conditions.
Decatur police report multiple wrecks across the city due to slick roadways, overpasses, and bridges. Residents are urged, if travel is necessary, to allow extra time to take it slow and get to your destination safely.
Redstone Arsenal and Marshall Space Flight Center are closed Tuesday. Only key and essential personnel should report. Gate 9 will be the only gate open.
