Turn lane paving scheduled for US 72 and Mooresville Road

(ALDOT, 256Today)

ATHENS — Travel between Athens and Huntsville will likely be slower than normal over the next several weeks.

Starting Monday, Wiregrass Construction will build right-turn lanes for the U.S. 72 and Mooresville Road intersection, weather permitting. Motorists should expect delays due to outside lane closures at the intersection from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

The $2.1 million project is funded through the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program-II, a program created by the Rebuild Alabama Act to advance projects of local interest on state routes. Local sponsor Limestone County provided matching funds.

The planned intersection improvements include signal upgrades and construction of additional or extended left and right turn lanes.

Later stages of the project will require inside lane closures for construction of left turn lanes, pipe installation, and other median work.

Completion is anticipated this summer.
