TVA plans controlled burns across North Alabama

KNOXVILLE – The Tennessee Valley Authority has started a controlled burn program on public lands in North Alabama.

Counties where the prescribed burns may be carried out include Colbert, Franklin, Jackson, Lauderdale, Marion and Marshall. The dates and times for the burns will be set weekly, based on weather conditions.

“These prescribed burns are valuable tools to protect and improve natural resources,” TVA spokesperson Clarissa McClain told 256 Today. “They can help maintain and establish wildlife habitat and reduce thatch and leaves that help fuel wildfires.

“The burns also stimulate the growth of desirable vegetation and recycle nutrients back into the soil.”

TVA Natural Resources Management will oversee the program. All prescribed fire use is subject to favorable weather conditions and the availability of fire personnel. The burnings began in December and are planned through March.

The burn plans consider the safety of the public and fire team members, land management objectives and favorable weather. Landowners within a reasonable distance of the burn are notified of the intent to burn as well as the local fire departments.

TVA and partners have safely conducted prescribed burns on more than 20,000 acres of public land in recent years.
