The University of North Alabama has received national recognition for its commitment to helping first-generation college students succeed, earning a spot in the FirstGen Forward Network Class of 2026.
The designation recognizes colleges and universities that have demonstrated a commitment to helping first-generation students succeed. For students who are the first in their families to attend college, having access to strong support systems and campus resources can make a meaningful difference.
UNA is one of more than 500 colleges and universities nationwide participating in the FirstGen Forward Network, which brings institutions together to share strategies and resources aimed at improving student success. The network includes schools in 48 states and the District of Columbia.
“We are extremely honored to be selected as a member of the FirstGen Forward Network,” said Dr. Brien Smith, UNA’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “This recognition reflects our institutional commitment to academic excellence and student success by ensuring first-generation students have the support and opportunities they need to thrive. As we continue advancing our mission, this membership will help strengthen our efforts to foster student achievement, increase opportunity, and create an environment where all students can reach their full potential.”
University leaders said the recognition comes as UNA prepares to introduce new programs and opportunities designed to help first-generation students build connections, find support and succeed on campus. As part of the network, university leaders will collaborate with peer institutions across the country, sharing ideas and participating in professional development focused on improving outcomes for first-generation students.
“Being selected to the FirstGen Forward Network marks an exciting beginning for UNA’s first-generation initiatives,” said Allie Mills, director of the University Success Center. “As we introduce new programs and opportunities this year, our goal is to create meaningful connections, celebrate the strengths of our first-generation students, and foster a sense of belonging across campus. We want every first-generation student to know they belong here and have an entire campus community invested in their success.”
Martina A. Martin, vice president at FirstGen Forward, said UNA distinguished itself during the application process by demonstrating a long-term commitment to helping first-generation students succeed.
“We are excited to welcome the University of North Alabama to the FirstGen Forward Network,” Martin said. “Throughout the application process, UNA demonstrated a clear commitment to advancing success for first-generation students, backed by a willingness to align strategy, data, and campus-wide efforts for long-term impact. Their leadership reflects a meaningful investment in creating the conditions where first-generation students can thrive.”
As UNA begins its work with the FirstGen Forward Network, university leaders say the partnership will strengthen the school’s efforts to support first-generation students and help them succeed throughout their college experience.
