The Alabama A&M University Board of Trustees has voted to extend President Daniel K. Wims’ contract through Dec. 31, 2032, giving him two additional years beyond his previous agreement and reaffirming its confidence in the university’s leadership.
Trustees approved the extension during their June 26 meeting. According to the university, the agreement also includes a salary increase following the board’s annual evaluation of the president.
Wims became Alabama A&M’s 12th president in January 2022 after serving for 12 years as the university’s provost and vice president of research and sponsored programs.
According to the university, the board’s annual evaluation considered areas including problem solving and decision making, personnel, academic planning and administration, fiscal management, student affairs, external relations, board relationships and community partnerships before approving the extension.
“I thank the Board of Trustees for the opportunity to continue serving Alabama A&M. The collective commitment and dedication of our administrative team, faculty, staff, students and alumni is to be commended. I look forward to our continued growth and success as we elevate Alabama A&M to produce the brightest students to become leaders who are change makers,” Wims said.
According to the university, Alabama A&M has recorded three consecutive years of record-breaking enrollment in fall 2023, fall 2024 and fall 2025 during Wims’ presidency.
The university also cited campus improvements, including a new student union and science building under construction, completed renovations to Morris Hall and Stephens Hall, and infrastructure projects such as creek erosion repair and Hillcrest restoration.
According to the university, Wims’ administration has secured increased research funding as well as higher federal and state appropriations while establishing a partnership with Huntsville Hospital to open what it describes as the first primary care clinic in north Huntsville.
The university said academic offerings have expanded during Wims’ presidency with Alabama’s first Bachelor of Science degree in Artificial Intelligence, a Department of Sport Management, master’s degree programs in interdisciplinary studies and food science business, doctoral programs in curriculum and instruction and social work, and a College Bridge Dual Enrollment Program.
