HUNTSVILLE — The National Weather Service Huntsville office reported three tornadoes struck the area Tuesday following its preliminary storm survey.

The survey Wednesday also revealed wind damage in many portions of Colbert, Lauderdale, Lawrence, and Limestone counties, the office said.

The three tornadoes were in Killingsworth Cove in Madison County, the Madison tornado in Limestone and Madison counties, and the south Athens tornado in Limestone County.

The most powerful was an EF-2 in Killingsworth Cove with a recorded top speed of 134 mph. It was on the ground just four minutes (7:07-7:11 p.m.) but traveled 1.41 miles and was 175 yards wide.

The Madison tornado was the first recorded tornado and it, too, was an EF-2 with a top speed of 125 mph. It was on the ground from 6:09-6:35 p.m. and traveled 13.15 miles. Its maximum width was 380 yards.

The south Athens tornado was an EF-1 and the weather office said its maximum speed reached 105 mph and it was on the ground 6:11-6:13 p.m., traveling 2.76 miles. Its maximum width was 160 yards.

The weather service said additional surveying may necessitate changes to these tornado tracks.
