Weather Service office still closed after fire

HUNTSVILLE — The staff at the Huntsville National Weather Service office is operating remotely following Monday’s fire at their office.

NWS Huntsville had planned to resume normal operations and return to the building today once they can confirm that the air quality conditions are safe. Forecast responsibilities will transition to the Birmingham National Weather Service forecast office.

The staff evacuated their building on the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus Monday morning. A spokesman with Huntsville Fire and Rescue told WHNT-TV an overloaded surge protector malfunctioned, causing the fire. No one was injured.

In the meantime, there is an 80% chance for showers and storms today. The forecast said The main concern is locally heavy as no severe storms are expected.

“Precipitation continues into the overnight hours and ends Wednesday morning with storm total amounts to a half-inch to one inch,” the forecast said.

There will be another round of showers and storms overnight Thursday into Friday bringing up to 2.5 inches of rain. The locally heavy rainfall could result in flash flooding and rises along area rivers and streams.

Then, bundle up this weekend because Ol’ Man Winter is still hanging around.
