Will be it be Tuberville vs Jones? Marshall vs Moore? Plus Pate to enter the race and more in this week’s OTR

Off The Record: The latest rumors and rumblings in Alabama

Tuberville vs. Jones?

Word among politicos and Democrats is that former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones will take on current Sen. Tommy Tuberville in next year’s governor’s race. Tuberville announced his campaign for Governor of Alabama earlier this week. Political insiders say it is a case of Jones hoping that “lightning will strike twice” making it possible for a Democrat to win in deep red Alabama. The lightning they are referring to is the promised Democratic court challenge to Tuberville’s Alabama residency. Jones previously won his Senate race after Republican candidate Roy Moore was accused of sexual misconduct causing some Republicans to pull their support.

Moore for Senate?

Will Rep. Barry Moore take on Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall in the race to fill Tuberville’s U.S. Senate seat? After Marshall announced his campaign on Thursday, all eyes turned to Enterprise. A Moore-Marshall match up would set up a high-stakes race. “Moore’s about 50-50 right now,” a source told OTR. “But it would be a clash of MAGA-aligned heavyweights: Moore’s grassroots populism against Marshall’s law-and-order credentials.” Meanwhile, there’s also the question of who would President Trump support in a Moore-Marshall match-up …

Pate announcement coming soon

Alabama Ag Commissioner Rick Pate is reportedly set to announce his campaign for lieutenant governor next week. Pate was elected commissioner of the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries in 2018. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Wes Allen announced his campaign for the state’s No. 2 spot in February. One state politico said Pate could make this an exciting Republican primary, “He’s won statewide office twice and has maintained a relatively low profile while running an efficient, well-liked department. He’s also a former mayor and has deep roots with the agricultural voting base.”

New candidate in Madison

A new city council candidate has announced in the city of Madison. Erica White is running for the District 6 seat. Karen Denzine, the City Council member representing District 6, has not yet announced if she is running for reelection. In addition to a possible White-Denzine match-up, we hear another possible candidate has been eyeing the seat and could possibly announce next week.

Land Rovers on the mountain

Attendees of Burritt on the Mountain’s Cocktails at the View enjoyed not only breathtaking views of Huntsville but also the latest Land Rover lineup at Wednesday’s popular event. As summer sponsors of the event, Jimmy Bryant’s Land Rover Huntsville parked the models right alongside Dr. William Henry Burritt’s more than 80-year-old mansion. No word yet if test drives were allowed.
