Working for you

Huntsville Utilities is working for you!

Huntsville Utilities (HU) is a Public Utility owned by the City of Huntsville. We answer only to the people we serve. Decisions are based on what is best for our customers. We do not pay dividends to stockholders. Instead, we provide lower prices to our customers.

Huntsville Utilities provides service to more than 210,000 electric; 105,000 water; and 61,000 natural gas customers in Huntsville and Madison County, Alabama. Huntsville Utilities is the 17th largest publicly owned utility service in the nation.

In addition to electricity, natural gas, and water, Huntsville Utilities operates a citywide fiberoptic infrastructure to provide high-speed telecommunication services in the community. This network is used by Google Fiber, to provide its high-speed internet service to the residential and business community.

Operational efficiency and customer service remain our top priority. There are 752 HU employees, which is an average of 1 HU Employee for every 536 customers. The HU Facilities Department maintains 4 major buildings and 32 field sites within the HU 800+ mile service area. In HU’s vehicle fleet, there are stripes on the side to identify different departments associated with those vehicles. Yellow is natural gas; green is joint; blue is water; and red is electric.

Huntsville Utilities has weather response procedures that are implemented prior to, during, and after any inclement weather activities. Employees are given responsibilities and then trained for specific weather-related duties. Should a weather event happen, Huntsville Utilities’ three operating departments (Natural Gas, Water & Electric) work together as one group.
