As interest in solar energy continues to grow across the Tennessee Valley, Huntsville Utilities is offering customers a new option through its Solar Connect program. Designed for residential and small commercial customers with behind-the-meter solar systems, Solar Connect provides a straightforward way to connect privately owned solar systems to the utility grid.
With Solar Connect, eligible customers with rooftop or ground-mounted solar systems can receive bill credits for excess energy sent back to the grid. Credits are based on the TVA wholesale rate, which is set at $0.064270 per kWh for 2026.
The program also gives customers with existing solar systems a new option as older TVA solar programs transition. Whether installing a new system or continuing to operate an existing one, Solar Connect offers a clear process for participating customers.
Program Requirements
Participation is available for systems up to 50 kW, with final sizing determined by the local inspection agency based on equipment ratings and electrical service. Systems larger than 10 kW require proof of general liability insurance.
Before a solar system can begin operating, Huntsville Utilities must provide written approval and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) must complete a final inspection. These requirements help ensure safe and reliable integration with the electric grid.

Getting Started
Customers interested in participating can begin the process by visiting the Solar Connect page on the Huntsville Utilities website and completing the Solar Connect Application. A non-refundable $100 application fee will be applied to the customer’s utility account.
Customers will also need to submit documentation including a single-line diagram, site plan, component specifications, and required placards. Huntsville Utilities reviews submitted materials to confirm the project meets interconnection and technical requirements.
Once approved, customers must sign and return the Interconnection Agreement before installation can move forward. Installations are required to follow guidelines established by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), and systems cannot be energized until both utility approval and local inspection requirements have been completed.
Supporting Renewable Energy Options
Solar Connect reflects continued interest in renewable energy options across the region while maintaining established standards for grid reliability and customer safety.
