Writer-director and Shoals native Watford seeks local filmmakers

FLORENCE — Do you have a short movie that needs a chance to find the right audience? A film that needs a home?

Actor-writer-director and Russellville native Myk Watford and his production team are looking for the next great Shoals-area filmmakers. Is that you? Keep reading.

Watford and his team want to see short films, no longer than 15 minutes, from current and
former film and theatre students at the University of North Alabama. Filmmakers must be
under the age of 35.

The movie, or movies, chosen by the team, will be shown at The Shoals Theatre on July 30 as part of the screening for “Sweetwater Road,” Watford’s movie shot in North Alabama in 2021.

Sweetwater Road’s tagline: “When you’re family, you fight for each other.” And the synopsis: “Hank refuses to give up on the family he is struggling to hold together. When his son is convicted of murder and his wife slips deeper into addiction, Hank is forced to re-evaluate everything he knows about what it means to be a father, husband, and an individual.”

If you want the chance for your movie to be part of the screening festivities, send an email with a link to your film to [email protected] by July 16. Do not send film files – only send a link to your work. In the email include the title of the film, your name, age, phone number, UNA Film & Theatre Department affiliation, and current Shoals-area resident status.

Maybe next time you and your film will be the subject of this story.

Sweetwater Road is a partnership with Hillbilly Circus, Vision Light Productions, Undivided Attention Inc. and the North Alabama community. The goal is to grow the film community by empowering youth and other budding Southern creatives and providing a safe space to share unique stories.
