Off The Record: The latest rumors and rumblings in Alabama
Strong showing
U.S. Rep. Dale Strong gave his annual update to a packed crowd numbering close to a thousand people at the VBC on Wednesday. Attendees say he was well received and was given a standing ovation at the end of his comments. While Strong’s popularity with the Chamber crowd remains unmatched, he’s also currently preparing for next year’s campaign against three already announced Democratic challengers. Strong has been holding quite a few of what we hear are very successful fundraisers in North Alabama.
Athens showdown
It’s looking like a real showdown in the Athens mayor’s race y’all. Incumbent Ronnie Marks is facing businessman Danny Whitfield, and by all accounts it will be a close one. Marks has been in office since 2010 and after the 2020 municipal election, announced it would be his last term. He then had a change of heart, saying this isn’t “the time to step down.” Local politicos tell us Whitfield has been building “steady and quiet” support. However, rumored polling numbers purport to show Marks with the current lead.
Roberts the frontrunner
John Roberts might have scared off any possible opponents with the immense success of his debut campaign event for the State Senate District 2 seat. At least that’s what one insider says: “Between the strong show of support and raising $100,000, John is, and no doubt will continue to be, the frontrunner in the District 2 race.” While no other opponents have currently announced, it is likely a Democratic candidate will step up to run in what is considered a “close” district. Who that candidate might be we can only contemplate …
Lomax lauded
According to all reports, there was an incredible crowd on hand last night as State Rep. James Lomax quietly kicked off his campaign for a sophomore trip to the Alabama House. Among those in attendance included Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter, who was eagerly anticipated and well-received by the Huntsvillian-heavy crowd. Lomax reportedly hauled in a huge chunk of change for his thus-far uncontested ‘26 race. According to one insider in the room for it, he and Speaker Ledbetter delivered remarks that made it clear they have their eye on the ball.
