NORMAL — The Alabama A&M University Marching Maroon & White Band has once again earned national recognition, securing a spot in the 2025 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands.
The event is Aug. 23 at NRG Stadium in Houston and marks the third appearance by the Marching Maroon & White at the event, which honors the musical excellence and cultural impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
The band first performed in 2015, when the event was known as the Queen City Battle of the Bands in Charlotte, and returned in 2022 after it had relocated to Houston.
“I am very excited to be selected to be a part of this prestigious event,” said Alabama A&M Director of Bands Carlton Wright. “It is one of the premier marching band events in the country. Our students are thrilled for the opportunity to perform, to travel, and to connect with their peers from other outstanding bands.”
Alabama A&M will be joined by Albany State University, Florida A&M University, Jackson State University, Langston University, North Carolina A&T State University, Prairie View A&M University, and Texas Southern University.
The Marching Maroon & White, known as the “Showband of the South,” is no stranger to the national spotlight.
In February, the band performed at the 2025 Honda Battle of the Bands at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. In 2023, it led the 97th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
“This is not a competition, everyone is a winner at this event,” Wright said. “The most rewarding part is seeing our students enjoy themselves, connect with other bands, and take pride in representing Alabama A&M on a national stage.
“We are looking forward to seeing our many alumni and friends in the Houston area and putting on a great show for them.”
Tickets are now on sale at www.nationalbattleofthebands.com, with prices starting at just $25. Individuals and organizations interested in group tickets or suites can complete the inquiry form available on the website.
Organizers say the event promises an even more powerful celebration of HBCU musical excellence, cultural pride, and community engagement.
“Each year, we strive to elevate the platform and the experience,” said Derek Webber, CEO of Webber Marketing and Executive Producer of the National Battle of the Bands. “NBOTB is more than a performance — it’s a movement that celebrates tradition, talent, and the cultural impact of HBCUs across the country.”
