Drivers traveling along I-65 in North Alabama are seeing clearer directions thanks to a major sign upgrade project.

The Alabama Department of Transportation has completed a major sign replacement project along Interstate 65, installing dozens of new signs to improve navigation and safety for motorists.

The project replaced 72 signs along 50 miles of I-65, stretching from south of the Morgan County line in Cullman County to the Alabama-Tennessee state line in Limestone County.

According to ALDOT, 35 signs were installed in Limestone County, 34 in Morgan County and three in northern Cullman County.

The project included installing new foundations and poles before crews used crane trucks to lift and secure large sign structures into place at a cost of approximately $800,000.

Officials said two additional signs are being added to the project, bringing the total number of replacements to 74. Crews will continue working to remove old concrete sign foundations in the coming weeks.

The upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to replace damaged, deteriorating or outdated signs. ALDOT says new signage offers improved reflectivity and legibility, which officials say enhances visibility, particularly at night, and improves overall road safety.

ALDOT officials also said additional sign replacement projects are in the planning stages for I-65 in Cullman County and I-565 in Limestone and Madison counties, with those projects expected to get underway later this summer.
