ALDOT: No interstate lane closures during Labor Day weekend

(ALDOT contributed)

MONTGOMERY – Alabama drivers hitting the road for Labor Day will find smoother travel ahead. According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, there will be no temporary lane closures on interstate routes during the holiday weekend.

The agency said closures will be suspended beginning Friday, Aug. 29, at noon and continue through Monday, Sept. 1, at 11:59 p.m.

“In 2024, nine people died in crashes during the Labor Day holiday weekend,” noted Amanda Deem, Drive Safe Alabama Coordinator. “By suspending lane closures, we hope to make everyone’s journey safer and less stressful.”

The department also reminded drivers to stay alert on busy roads. Safety tips include:

  • Watch your speed. “Speeding reduces your reaction time and increases the severity of crashes. Always follow posted speed limits.”

  • Avoid distracted driving. “Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of vehicle crashes. Put your phone down and keep your focus on the road. Alabama law prohibits drivers from holding a cell phone while driving.”

  • Never drive impaired. “Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is not only illegal but extremely dangerous. Arrange for a designated driver or use a rideshare service if you plan on drinking.”

Motorists can find real-time traffic information, including live camera feeds, by visiting ALGOtraffic.com or downloading the ALGO Traffic app.
