MADISON – Madison School Board member and business leader Alice Lessmann has declared that she is running for Madison City Council, District 5.
“Today, I am announcing my candidacy for Madison City Council District 5,” Lessmann said in a news release. “For almost twenty years, our home has been in Madison City District 5 and I’m deeply invested in its future. I’ve had the opportunity to serve on many different boards and volunteered in our Madison community, including currently, the Madison City Board of Education.
“It is my privilege and has reinforced my belief in the importance of community service.”
Last Thursday, District 5 Councilmember Ranae Bartlett announced she would be running for mayor of Madison.
Lessmann has been a member of the school board since 2020, representing the needs of students and families while contributing to the advancement of education throughout the state as the District 9 Director for the Alabama Association of School Boards since 2021.
“We need a collaborative approach of working closely with residents and stakeholders to develop a comprehensive plan that addresses our infrastructure needs while safeguarding our city’s financial stability,” Lessmann said. “I want to bring my blend of business experience, educational insight, and dedication to our community to help us build an even brighter future for Madison.”
According to her announcement, Lessmann’s dedication to Madison is rooted in her 21 years of service in the Alabama National Guard, where she retired as a lieutenant colonel. She has been active in the River of Hope Campaign, Madison’s Growth Committee, and an avid volunteer and supporter of the Madison Chamber, Madison PTA, American Legion, and other Madison organizations.
Lessmann’s contributions have earned her accolades, including the 2024 Spirit of Madison Award, the 2024 Madison City Philanthropic Businessperson of the Year award, 2022 Women Honoring Women recognition, and the 2022 Small Business Association’s District Director’s Award. Her family was recognized as the 2020 Madison Family of the Year for their community involvement.
“My commitment to you is that I will always be honest, transparent, and I will always listen to you,” Lessmann said. “I look forward to the upcoming months of this campaign so I can hear the concerns and needs of District 5.”
Alice and her husband, Steve, live in Madison and have two college-age children.
The municipal election will be Aug. 26.
