An opponent for Strong? Your newest tourist destination; New eats and more in this week’s OTR

Off The Record: The latest rumors and rumblings in North Alabama

A Strong Opponent?

The New Year also kicks off a new campaign cycle for north Alabama congressman Dale Strong. Strong ran unopposed in the 2024 Republican Primary and General Elections but talk is stirring that the sophomore Congressman may face an opponent in the 2026 Republican Primary. Sources say first-term State Representative Ernie Yarbrough who represents Lawrence County along with parts of Morgan and Colbert counties is considering a run against Strong and is making the political rounds. Political observers make Strong the heavy early favorite due to his conservative record, ties to the District and close relationship with President Trump who would be sure to endorse him.

Perhaps it will be Chairwoman

Could Madison County’s next Chairman be a Chairwoman?  Not too long ago OTR ran an item on who would replace current Chairman Mac McCutchen once his term concludes as many believe he will not seek another.  While numerous names were tossed about, the item failed to mention District 6 Commissioner Violet Edwards.  “It would be a mistake to overlook Violet, she has proven herself to be a capable and resourceful leader.  And she understands the important role of Madison County,” said one supporter.  The position is of statewide interest as Madison County remains a top economic driver in Alabama.

Limestone County, tourist destination

Limestone County, already Alabama’s fastest growing county, is aiming to be the state’s fastest growing tourist destination as well.  Sweet Home Alabama recently highlighted Limestone’s County very own Canoe & Kayak trail in their vacation guide.  The 21.9 mile lazy winding is highlighted for its “towering bluffs, untouched forest, and rolling meadows.”  The vacation guide also heavily features Limestone’s county seat, Athens, as a “classic southern city”.

New Eats

The first week of February will bring two new dining options at Clift Farm.  Both Chuck’s Fish and Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill are set to open after receiving their liquor license from Madison County on January 29th. Chuck’s Fish is a longtime favorite in Tuscaloosa and Clift will be the first Alabama location for Stoney River – a restaurant concept from the same company as J Alexander’s which has been highly successful at Town Madison.
