ATHENS — Several area high school students will be launching their future among leaders, thanks to the Athens Rotary Club Youth Leadership Awards.
The club is sponsoring eight high school students to attend an intensive three-day leadership training program at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.
“Supporting our youth in their leadership development is one of the most impactful things we can do as Rotarians,” said Rotary Club President Griff Redmill. “We are thrilled to sponsor these eight outstanding students and to help provide them with the tools, experiences, and confidence they need to become leaders in our community and beyond.”
RYLA, a globally recognized initiative of Rotary International, focuses on cultivating leadership skills, fostering teamwork, and instilling the values of Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self.”
With only 96 spots available, this program offers a unique opportunity for high-achieving students to enhance their leadership potential while engaging in a dynamic curriculum with a “mini-Space Camp” experience.
The students from Athens and Limestone County are:
- Abigale LaGrone, Tanner High School
- Madelyn Menefee, Lindsay Lane Christian Academy
- Maggie Leonard, Athens High School
- Sulma Villamonte, East Limestone High School
- Allie Lovell, Athens Bible School
- Gabby Keenum, Athens High School
- Payton Barnett, Ardmore High School
- Marissa Gonzales, Ardmore High School
Students were selected based on academic achievement, school and community service, extracurricular involvement, and other significant accomplishments. After being nominated and reviewing the program with their families, they completed a rigorous application process for consideration.
RYLA attendees will participate in leadership workshops, team-building activities, and mentorship sessions, all guided by Rotary members and Space Center staff.
“RYLA is a transformative experience for students,” said John Hubbard, Athens Rotary RYLA coordinator.”They not only learn what it means to lead effectively, but they also discover the importance of serving others.
“It’s inspiring to see the growth and enthusiasm these young people will bring back to their schools and communities after attending the program.”
