Christmas miracle: Homeless man saved from being crushed in compactor

HUNTSVILLE — It’s the season of miracles and a homeless man was the recipient of a miracle in Huntsville.

The man was sleeping in a dumpster when a Republic Services truck, while making its rounds, lifted the dumpster, tossing the contents – including the man – into the back.

However, before turning on the compacter, the driver checked his truck’s cameras and saw the man struggling inside.

After helping the man get out, the driver called his supervisor to let him know what happened.

After the supervisor, Operations Manager Chuck Cantrell, arrived, he spoke with the driver and the homeless man.

Later, on his own, Cantrell went to a store and bought the man clothes and boots. He also helped him find a shelter.

Cantrell said it’s important for people to look out for each other, especially those who are less fortunate.

He also credits the driver for following his training, which turned out to be life-saving.
