City of Madison to hold amnesty day for misdemeanor warrants

The City of Madison will host an amnesty court date next month for individuals with outstanding misdemeanor warrants, including traffic citations.

Anyone who believes they may have an active warrant is encouraged to call the Madison Municipal Court at 256-772-5617 to confirm their status or appear before a judge on March 4 at 8 a.m.

Court officials say the amnesty day is designed to help people resolve cases without fear of immediate arrest and, in most cases, avoid jail time. The effort is expected to help clear more than 200 outstanding misdemeanor warrants.

“Amnesty Days help us reduce the backlog of cases and keep our courts operating efficiently,” Madison Municipal Court officials said. “We understand that in some instances, individuals are aware they have a warrant, but fear of arrest prevents them from resolving it. In many cases, participants can simply pay a fine and move forward with peace of mind.”

City officials encourage anyone with questions about their status to contact the court ahead of the scheduled date.
