DECATUR – A teenage girl was killed in a fiery car wreck Saturday night and the driver of the other vehicle was charged with DUI and murder, Decatur police said.
Police said officers were called to a crash with entrapment just after 9 p.m. at the intersection of Beltline Road and Westmeade Street. Reports indicated that a sole female occupant, identified as Chloe Hastings, 17, was trapped inside her vehicle that had caught fire.
“Before emergency responders arrived, multiple courageous citizens stopped to render aid in an attempt to rescue the trapped individual,” Decatur police said in a news release. “Tragically, during their efforts, the vehicle exploded, seriously injuring one of the civilians. The civilian was later airlifted to UAB Hospital due to the severity of their burns.Â
“Our hearts go out to her family and loved ones during this time of unimaginable loss. We also extend our deepest sympathy and gratitude to the brave individuals who risked their lives trying to save her. Their courage in the face of danger is a testament to the strength and compassion of our community.”
When first responders arrived, they encountered a fully engulfed SUV with driver still trapped inside. Despite the actions of the bystanders, Hastings, a student at Priceville High School, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Decatur Police Department’s Traffic Unit responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. During the course of the investigation, the driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash, identified as Kevin Jay Penich, was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. On Monday, Penich was additionally charged with murder. He was booked into the Morgan County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
“The Decatur Police Department would like to publicly recognize and thank the brave citizens who risked their lives in an effort to save a young woman,” the release said. “Their actions represent the very best of our community. One of these heroes suffered serious injuries, and our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies go out to him and his family.
“Their courage will not be forgotten.”
