DECATUR – Decatur native Katye Coats, an advocate for public education, is running for the District 3 seat on the Decatur City School Board.

A product of Decatur City Schools, Coats said she is running to ensure that every child in Decatur has access to a high-quality education supported by strong leadership, sound planning, and engaged communities.

“As a mom of two children in Decatur City Schools, I’ve seen firsthand the importance of strong schools for our families, our economy, and our future,” said Coats. “I’m running to strengthen our leadership, modernize our facilities, and deepen our connection with the community.

“Every student deserves a school system that is forward-thinking, fiscally responsible, and deeply committed to their success.”

A graduate of Austin High School where she was a drum major and member of the National Honor Society, Coats graduated summa cum laude from the University of North Alabama and earned a master of accountancy from the University of South Alabama.

Coats has been a licensed CPA since 2011 and specializes in tax consulting and strategic planning — skills she believes are crucial to ensuring fiscal responsibility and thoughtful budgeting within the school system.

She serves as treasurer for the Morgan County-Decatur Farmers Market Board and the Decatur High School Athletic Booster Club. Coats is also a member of the Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation Women’s Guild.

Coats and her husband, Matt, live in Decatur with their two children who are enrolled in Decatur City Schools. The family is involved in school and the community, supporting academics, athletics, and the arts.
