Comcast program to offer free and discounted internet to disadvantaged families in North Alabama

Comcast is now offering their signature low-cost broadband program Internet Essentials with the federal Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), to provide more free and discounted internet options to disadvantaged families in North Alabama.

Comcast’s Internet Essentials program targets low-income households with school-aged children; seniors; veterans; people with disabilities; and residents enrolled in public assistance and housing assistance programs with heavily subsidized high-speed internet service for $9.95 a month.

ACP is a long-term replacement program for the former Emergency Broadband Benefits program, giving eligible low-income households a credit of up to $30 a month toward the cost of internet service.

The conjoining of the two programs makes ACP credits available for all the company’s Xfinity Internet speed tiers, including Internet Essentials.

“As the world becomes more digital, it is crucial that everyone has the resources and opportunities they need to excel in today’s economy,” said Jason Gumbs, regional SVP for Comcast. “We’re making it simple for both new and existing customers to use ACP credits toward Xfinity Internet services.”

Comcast has invested more than $152 million in broadband infrastructure and technology in Alabama, including network upgrades to bridge what they call the “digital divide” – that is the gap between those who have access to communications technology i.e., high speed broadband, WiFi and VoIP, and those that don’t or can’t afford it.

Today’s announcement is part of Project UP, Comcast’s $1 billion commitment to make the digital world accessible to 50 million people over the next 10 years.
