Decatur police warns public to practice caution after string of burglaries, sexual assaults

DECATUR — Lock your doors and windows.

The Decatur Police Department is warning the River City about a sexual predator who has broken into houses in the area and assaulted residents.

The offender has been described as a Black male, approximately 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-9 in height, between 20 and 45 years old, with a slender to medium build. The suspect covered his face during the burglaries and sexual assaults.

In all of the reported cases, the offender entered the homes through an unlocked window, police said.

The first burglary and assault in the string of crimes occurred April 27 at Ferry Street NE.

A second crime was Dec. 7 on Hay Drive SW and, most recently, the perpetrator struck at 2nd Avenue SW during the early morning of Dec. 14.

Following the reports from the victims, Decatur PD is requesting that residents ensure the doors and windows to their residences are secure and locked, especially at night.  

The department’s Criminal Investigation Division is requesting any information that might be beneficial to these cases or leads to the identity of the individual.Call the Decatur Police Department’s Tip Line at 256-341-4636 with any information.
