SHEFFIELD — Patterson Hood has Muscle Shoals music in his blood.

His father, David Hood, was bassist for the Swampers – the legendary studio musicians from the Shoals. And he and Mike Cooley, both from the Shoals area, founded beloved rock band Drive-By Truckers.

Now a resident of Portland, Ore., Hood is back home for a solo show Friday at The Ritz Theatre in Sheffield. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.

In addition to his musical talents, Hood also writes essays and short stories, with pieces published in The New York Times Magazine, The Oxford American, American Songwriter, and on NPR.

Drive-By Truckers have 14 studio albums and have played around 2,500 shows over nearly three decades. A 35-song, career-spanning box set recorded live at The Fillmore in San Francisco was released in 2015.

In 2022, the band released “Welcome 2 Club XIII (ATO)”, a reflection on their younger years playing at dive bars and on raising kids who are now the ages he and Cooley were when they started this journey.

The band is set to release a deluxe reissue of its breakthrough album “Southern Rock Opera”, supported by a U.S. tour, where they’ll play the full album.

In addition to his work with Drive-By Truckers, Patterson has three solo albums and is working on a fourth. He has co-produced or played on albums by Jerry Joseph, Bettye LaVette, Booker T. Jones, and The Dexateens.
