HUNTSVILLE – A Huntsville man has been indicted on child sexual exploitation charges, U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona of the Northern District office of Alabama announced.
According to a news release, a four-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court charges Randy Steven Smith, 48, of Huntsville with one count of sexual exploitation of children, one count of receipt of child pornography, one count of possession of child pornography and one count of transfer of obscene matter to a minor.
The incidents occurred between 2023 and 2024 in Madison County, the release said.
The FBI Violent Crimes Task Force investigated the case with the assistance of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, U.S. Marshal Service, Homeland Security Investigations, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, and Huntsville Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney R. Leann White is prosecuting the case.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet and to identify and rescue victims.
