Federal candidates look to Huntsville; ALFA digs in; restaurants opening; and more in this week’s OTR

Off The Record: The latest rumors and rumblings in North Alabama

Federal candidates look to Huntsville

North Alabama continues to draw federal candidates looking to raise funds as Huntsville’s Research Park community has been generous in the past. Last week, U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Monrovia) hosted U.S. Rep. Ken Calvert from California, chair of the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee. Next week, U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks), chair of the House Armed Services Committee, will visit for fundraising events of his own and rumor is that a visit from House Speaker Mike Johnson is in the works for this spring.

ALFA digs in

Despite an impending uphill battle, the Alabama Farmers Federation plans to go full steam ahead on their legislative push to offer farm bureau health insurance plans. Proponents say the concept works well in other states, while critics say the proposal will allow ALFA to be exempt from critical regulations other insurers must follow, causing major problems for healthcare providers and those with preexisting conditions. The political giant maintains their plan would cover middle class farmers stuck in the “coverage gap” and could alleviate skyrocketing costs for young farmer families. With the bill reportedly starting in the Alabama House, ongoing negotiations will determine how quickly it is considered. Sources say ALFA isn’t budging on the bill’s conditions.

More restaurants opening

Three restaurants are joining the Town Madison lineup soon. Lola’s Cocina, Steam Boys and Walk On’s Sports Bistreaux are all set to open this Spring. Lola’s Cocina is the newest concept from Power Brands Hospitality Group in a partnership with Phil Sandoval serving a casual Mexican menu. Steam Boys will be the second Alabama location for the Nashville-based group offering Chinese comfort food and known for their steamed bao buns. Walk On’s will also be a second local location for the franchise and promises to be the place to catch the game and dine on a Louisiana-influenced sports bar menu.

Game On!

It’s “Game On!” at the Madison Public Library. The library will be hosting a group for people who want to play board games. The program, for adults only, aims to connect board game enthusiasts for friendly fun. The library will provide games or participants can bring their own from home. The social group kicks off March 23, at 3 p.m.
