Fly-in movie: FlyQuest hosts free movie night at the Avilution air hangar

HUNTSVILLE — Leave it to Huntsville to take movie viewing to another level. In this case, an airplane hangar.

FlyQuest is hosting a free family “Movie Night in the Hangar” with Avilution next month at Huntsville International Airport. FlyQuest is a local nonprofit that highlights opportunities in the aviation field for students. Avilution is a software company that is building the technology for the next generation of manned and unmanned air vehicles.

FlyQuest Director David Knies said “Movie Night in the Hangar” is a fun, aviation-filled night to inspire young people to learn more about the aviation industry.

“FlyQuest ‘Movie Night’ in the Hangar event is a great way to showcase our mission of inspiring the next generation of aviation professionals to the North Alabama community,” he said. “‘Movie Night’ invites families from all over the Huntsville and North Alabama area to explore our facilities, dive into our curriculum, and meet with our teachers and mentors who share an enormous passion for equipping the next generation of pilots, air traffic controllers, aircraft maintenance and airport operations professionals.”

Knies said the aviation industry affects every part of our lives.

“90% of what’s in your house flew there,” said Knies.

The Aug. 13 event will feature a showing of “Living in the Age of Airplanes” in the air-conditioned Avilution hanger at Huntsville International airport as well as additional activities. It all starts at 7:30 p.m.

“The FlyQuest Mobile Aviation Classroom will be open for tours and fun, a 6DOF flight simulator at our location will be available for use, and we will have cool aircraft on static display,” Knies said.

The What’s Popp’N food truck will be on site, selling popcorn, cotton candy, and all the other movie staples.

“Movie Night in the Hangar” is just one of many events and programs facilitated by FlyQuest, which was started by Huntsville tech entrepreneur Mark Spencer.

“FlyQuest also offers unique leaning programs utilizing state-of-the-art teaching aids to augment local school classrooms through our partnership program,” Knies said. “Movie Night also attracts pilots from all over the region to attend our event and participate in our mission. These pilots serve as teachers and mentors to our outreach programs, flying young eagle flights, and participating in our community based events.

“They are the bedrock of our ability to showcase our mission to the community, promote aviation based careers, and inspire those children who might not have been exposed to aviation otherwise.”
