Franklin County Sheriff Oliver endorses Mitchell for attorney general

RUSSELLVILLE — Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver has endorsed former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell for attorney general.

Oliver has led the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department since 2011. He served as the Alabama Sheriffs Association President in 2023, and has held various leadership roles in other regional and statewide law enforcement initiatives, according to a news release.

“Jay Mitchell stands shoulder to shoulder with law enforcement,” Oliver said. “He understands what it takes for us to keep Alabama families safe and will have our backs as the state’s top cop. I’ve seen too many politicians talk tough but disappear when it counts — Jay’s not one of them. He’s the real deal.

“I’m proud to support Jay Mitchell for Alabama attorney general.”

Mitchell welcomed the endorsement and underscored his commitment to Sheriff Oliver’s priorities.

“Sheriff Oliver has delivered tangible public safety improvements for residents of Franklin County and law enforcement partners across northwest Alabama,” Mitchell said. “His leadership speaks for itself, and I understand the responsibility of having his endorsement.

“As attorney general, Alabama can count on me to back the blue and support our law enforcement leaders with what they need to create lasting change in their communities.”

The Republican primary is May 19.
