Off The Record: The latest rumors and rumblings in Alabama
For real this time
It’s really happening. U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville is announcing his run for governor of Alabama early next week. “He’s announcing and he’s winning. There is no candidate who can beat him,” observed one well-connected politico. “The only question now is will it be Coach Governor or Governor Coach?” The announcement is likely to shine a fresh spotlight on resident requirements. Candidates for governor are required to reside in the state for seven years. Tuberville has previously brushed aside the concern, however, critics continue to claim he has been living in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., since retiring from coaching football.
Sales-tax concerns
A half-cent sales tax in Madison that benefits the schools is becoming a hot topic of conversation in Alabama’s ninth-largest city. Recent comments by mayoral candidate Steve Smith regarding the tax have raised quite a few eyebrows. One school-affiliated official shared that not once in five years has Smith attended a school board meeting or asked to be updated on what the schools’ needs are: “I’m not sure how you can be sure where the money is needed if you’ve never asked.” Smith proposed splitting the half-cent sales tax between the school system and the city.
More restaurants coming!
It was announced this week that Grimaldi’s Pizzeria and Melt will have locations at Clift Farm. One other restaurant that has not been announced yet is La Parilla – a Mexican food concept where “authentic Mexican flavors meet a family-friendly atmosphere.” With 23 locations – mainly in Georgia – this will be the first north Alabama location for the popular eatery. They are expected to break ground soon and open early next year.
Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley celebrates in Athens
Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley is celebrating the competition of its first home in Limestone County. A home dedication will take place in Athens on May 31 when a new family complete with a new baby will receive the keys to their new home. There hasn’t been an active Habitat for Humanity chapter in Limestone County for more than 10 years. However, the River Valley chapter is happy to step up to fill the need for affordable homes built in partnership with the future homeowner and local community volunteers. And we hear there might just be another home in the area coming soon …
