HUNTSVILLE — The Rocket City’s vision of increased public transportation received a boost Thursday when Huntsville agreed to purchase four buses from Gillig.
The one-year, $2.45 million contract allows for the purchase of four diesel or hybrid/diesel buses each year with the option of two one-year renewable contracts. The Federal Transit Administration will be paying 80% of the cost with Huntsville funding the remainder.
“A robust transit system reduces traffic congestion and pollution and also provides essential access to jobs, education, and health care for all residents,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “Investing in public transportation infrastructure is investing in the future of Huntsville, ensuring that we remain a vibrant, connected, and thriving community.”
Director of Parking and Public Transit Quisha Bryant said acquiring the buses will help increase the number of routes.
“These new buses will allow us to service new routes, extend service to existing routes, and increase the frequency of our routes,” said Bryant. “The buses are also needed to maintain our replacement schedule and required spare ratios.”
According to the city, the hybrid/diesel buses woill help the city meet its goal of sustainability, because the buses produce significantly lower emissions, deliver increased efficiency, and also decrease maintenance costs.
Additional funding in the form of grants would be needed to purchase hybrid/diesel buses.
