The Huntsville Firefighters Association has endorsed State Rep. James Lomax (R-Huntsville) in the Republican primary for Alabama House District 20, citing his record on public safety and support for first responders.

In a statement, the association said the endorsement reflects Lomax’s “consistent track record of prioritizing first responder welfare and public safety initiatives,” pointing to both legislative efforts and local initiatives.

Among those efforts, the group highlighted Lomax’s role in advancing legislation to create a state income tax deduction for qualified overtime compensation, a policy they say directly benefits firefighters and other public safety workers who rely on overtime shifts.

The association also credited Lomax with supporting funding for cancer screenings for Huntsville firefighters, addressing occupational health risks associated with the profession.

“The Huntsville Firefighters Association recognizes James Lomax as a dedicated public safety advocate whose work in Montgomery has already yielded positive results for District 20,” the group said in its announcement.

Lomax, a Republican first elected in 2022, currently serves as House Majority Whip in the Alabama Legislature.

He faces former U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks in the May 19 Republican primary, setting up a closely watched contest in the Huntsville-area district. Brooks previously served in the Alabama House, on the Madison County Commission and in Congress from 2011 to 2023.

The Huntsville Firefighters Association said it is encouraging District 20 voters to support Lomax, citing his focus on tax relief for frontline workers and investment in firefighter health programs.
