High school students interested in pursuing a career in medicine will soon have an opportunity to explore the field firsthand through a program at Huntsville Hospital.

The Medical Career Explorer Program is designed for students ages 15 and older, offering a behind-the-scenes look at a wide range of health care professions through monthly sessions, guest speakers and guided hospital tours.

Organizers say the program is aimed at helping students better understand career pathways in a rapidly growing industry while connecting them with professionals currently working in the field.

Participants will take part in group discussions and demonstrations led by health care workers across multiple specialties, providing exposure to roles ranging from patient care and nursing to administrative and technical careers. While the program does not include direct patient care, it offers observational experiences within a hospital setting.

The application period for the 2026–2027 program opens May 15, with space limited and accepted on a first come, first served basis. Students must complete an online application during the summer enrollment window to be considered.

An initial onboarding and information session is scheduled for Aug. 25 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Dowdle Center on the Huntsville Hospital campus. Both students and a parent or guardian are required to attend.

The program runs from September through April, with monthly meetings covering different areas of health care. Students who attend at least six of the eight sessions will receive a certificate of completion.

Health care leaders say programs like this are increasingly important as demand for medical professionals continues to grow, driven in part by an aging population and ongoing advancements in treatment and technology.

More information about the program and application requirements is available through Huntsville Hospital’s Corporate University.
