Registration is now open for one of North Alabama’s largest annual community events, with more than 6,500 runners, walkers and breast cancer survivors expected to participate in the 23rd annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run this fall.
The event returns to downtown Huntsville on Saturday, Oct. 17, beginning with the Survivors’ Walk at 8 a.m., followed by the 5K run and walk at 8:30 a.m.
Since its inception, the event has raised more than $8.4 million for the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund at Huntsville Hospital Foundation. The proceeds have helped equip the Huntsville Hospital Breast Center and Madison Hospital Breast Center with advanced diagnostic technology while funding free support classes for breast cancer survivors.
This year’s fundraiser will support the purchase of a new Envision Mammography Platform for Huntsville Hospital Breast Center. According to the Huntsville Hospital Foundation, the next-generation 3D mammography system will make Huntsville Hospital the first in Alabama to offer the technology.
The system is designed to produce more detailed 3D breast images to improve early detection and diagnosis while also providing a more comfortable screening experience. Hospital officials said its redesigned positioning technology will improve accessibility for women of all body types and those with limited mobility.
Early registration is available for $25 through Aug. 31 and includes a complimentary long-sleeve race T-shirt. Participants can register at lizhurleyribbonrun.org.
The Huntsville Hospital Foundation recognized CFD Research as the event’s premier sponsor and Torch Technologies as the founding sponsor.
The Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund was established in 1999 by longtime WAFF 48 anchor Liz Hurley following her own battle with breast cancer. The fund supports breast cancer awareness efforts and helps provide the latest diagnostic technology for Huntsville Hospital and Madison Hospital breast centers.
The Huntsville Hospital Foundation raises more than $7 million annually to support Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children and Madison Hospital through community and corporate donations.
