Huntsville International Airport open; some flights delayed, cancelled

HUNTSVILLE — The Huntsville International Airport Operations crew has been preparing for snow for several months.

And their preparation paid off with the arrival of the snowstorm Friday.

“Airport Operations began planning for this winter weather event early in the fall, and part of this plan is to pre-treat vital surfaces in advance of snow and ice, so snow removal operations actually began before we saw the first flake,” said Public Relations Manager Mary Swanstrom.

The crew has been working to keep the runways, roadways and parking lots at the airport passable, she said.

“The heavy frozen precipitation kept our Operations crews busy from the wee hours through the morning plowing and sweeping the runways, taxiways, ramps, roads and parking lots in anticipation of early morning departures,” Swanstrom said. “Because of these efforts, our airport is able to remain open through winter conditions and keep traffic flowing.

“There have been some cancelled and delayed arrivals this morning from southern-tier airports experiencing extreme weather including DFW, Charlotte and Atlanta, and some departures to these locations have been affected, as well.”

Though the airport is open, flight decisions are made by the individual airlines.

“We encourage passengers to stay in touch with their airline, download the app and be sure to opt in for their emails to receive the latest information about their flight,” Swanstrom said.
