John Hunt Park cross country, disc golf courses closed for repair

HUNTSVILLE – Winter weather took a toll on the cross country and disc golf courses at John Hunt Park and, to repair the area, the city of Huntsville has closed the courses to the public.

Sprigs are being planted in extensive areas of the course that were affected by harsh winter temperatures, according to Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett. Sod will also be installed in the start/finish line area of the cross-country course.

The sprigs and sod will be watered frequently, and foot traffic on the affected areas must be kept to a minimum, he said.

However, the walking path is not closed, he said.

“We have made the determination that temporarily closing the course is our best approach to ensuring that these areas are ready for our upcoming fall events,” Gossett said. “At this time, we anticipate the course being closed until our first race in September.”
