Just a ‘wintry mix’, no snow, in the forecast

HUNTSVILLE — Sorry, kids. There won’t be any snowball fights any time soon.

While a mix of rain and snow may occur Thursday night, the National Weather Service’s Huntsville office is saying there is little to no chance of accumulation.

“No snowfall accumulations are in our official forecast as of right now and there is very low confidence that we will see any accumulating snowfall or impacts anywhere in our forecast area,” the office said today. “Low to medium chances (20 to 50%) of precipitation are forecast Thursday night through Friday night as an upper-level storm system clips across the Tennessee Valley.

“Rain may mix with snow at times, especially across the higher elevations of southern middle Tennessee and far northeast Alabama.”

The office said a more likelihood of rain will be Friday into Friday night as a front moves through the area.

“The most likely time frame for precipitation appears to be Friday afternoon/evening, when low-medium (20-50%) chances for precipitation is forecast,” the forecast said. “No snow accumulations are forecast, but a light dusting up to a couple tenths of an inch may occur in the higher terrain of southern Middle Tennessee and far Northeast Alabama.”

While the speed of the system is key to the timing and impact of the precipitation, the forecasters said, because of the warm ground, “we do not expect impacts to escalate rapidly (as they did in the event from Dec. 26 last year).”
