‘King Kling’; Costco construction update; ‘Welcome to the Stone’; and more in this week’s OTR

Off The Record: The latest rumors and rumblings in North Alabama

King Kling

All eyes are turning to Huntsville City Councilman Bill Kling in the wake of last week’s municipal election. If Michelle Watkins beats Devyn Keith in the Sept. 24 runoff, many expect Kling to become the deciding vote on council. “That’s a very powerful position in Alabama’s largest city,” noted one local politico. Kling’s District 4 seat will be up for election in two years – challengers are expected.

Costco update

Construction on the Costco at Clift Farm continues at a rapid pace. The roof is on as progress seems to be made every week. Expect the construction to just speed up from here as sources say Costco plans to open in November. OTR broke the news of the new Costco last November.

Courtland comes through

Courtland Mayor Linda Peebles is celebrating yet another win. The tiny Lawrence County town has finalized the route of the Singing River Trail through its picture perfect downtown. Construction on the route will begin after additional studies, engineering and finalizing of the design. Founded on Dec. 13, 1819, Courtland is “one day older than the great state Of Alabama,” as locals like to point out.

Women Honoring Women

The Women’s Economic Development Council’s signature fundraising event, Women Honoring Women, is set for Sept. 19. Five local women “who have created a legacy and are serving as an inspiration to others” will be honored. WAAY 31’s ever-popular Marie Waxel will once again be serving as the event’s Mistress of Ceremonies and promises a night of camaraderie, inspiration and celebration. We hear there are still a few tickets available if you haven’t snagged one yet.

“Welcome to the Stone”

Some folks are scratching their heads after this week’s unveiling of the Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association’s new tagline, “Welcome to the Stone.” Apparently, shortening Limestone to ‘Stone is not the connection that immediately comes to mind. Despite a few head scratchers, everyone is in total agreement it’s still better than the “Florence Fiasco” of 2022 when that Northwest Alabama city unveiled a rebranded logo featuring a capital F and what appeared to be an exclamation mark.
