Madison County man charged with murder of wife

HUNTSVILLE — A late night shooting Sunday resulted in the death of a Madison County woman and her husband jailed on murder charges, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said.
According to a news release, deputies responded around 10:30 p.m. to a residence on the 200 block of Steppe Court in the Riverton area following reports of a shooting in progress.

Upon arrival, deputies located a female victim inside the residence with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to Huntsville Hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.
Following an investigation by MCSO Major Crimes Unit, sheriff’s detectives arrested Gary Robert Wharton, 64, in connection with the shooting. Wharton has been charged with murder and was booked into the Madison County Jail.
This incident remains under investigation, the sheriff’s office said. Further details will be released as they become available.
