Madison to hold public meetings on redistricting

(City of Madison/Powerpoint contributed)

MADISON — Redistricting is the way states change the districts that determine who represents us. The districts are divided geographically and by population.

Every 10 years, jurisdictions with City Council districts evaluate whether a change to their district boundaries, known as redistricting, is needed, based on the most recent U.S. Census population data.

Madison has scheduled three public meetings on redistricting; the first is Monday in the City Council Chambers.

The presentation starts at 5:30 p.m. and questions and comments are encouraged.

At a public meeting in September 2021, city of Madison consultants presented data showing that redistricting in Madison is warranted.

There are five steps in reviewing and implementing redistricting.

Madison is in the third step – public outreach and meetings about defining and developing a districting plan. The second public hearing is scheduled for Aug. 14 and the final adoption plan is scheduled for Sept. 11.
