Madison will soon have a new landmark designed to celebrate both the city’s identity and the nation’s 250th birthday.

City officials, along with Madison Visionary Partners and the Madison Chamber of Commerce, announced plans for the MADiSON Letters, a large public art installation that will be placed at Town Madison near Toyota Field.

The installation will stand 6.5 feet tall and span 30 feet wide, spelling MADiSON with a unique twist. The lowercase “i” will be recessed two feet, allowing visitors to step into the space and become the “i” in Madison for photos.

The landmark will be located just off Stadium Way across from J. Alexander’s and adjacent to Toyota Field, one of the city’s busiest entertainment destinations.

The letters will debut with a patriotic design honoring America’s 250th birthday. In the years ahead, the artwork will be repainted on a recurring basis by local artists selected through the Madison Arts Alliance, creating an evolving public art display that showcases local creativity.

In addition to the oversized letters, the project will feature landscaping, an interactive display explaining the installation and a selfie station designed to encourage visitors to stop and take photos.

Madison Visionary Partners Executive Director Christina Hearne said the project has been years in the making.

“This is an exciting milestone for Madison and for everyone who has believed in this project from the very beginning. The MADiSON Letters will be more than a landmark, they’ll be a symbol of community pride, connection, and the incredible momentum our city continues to build,” said Hearne.

The installation will be constructed from fiberglass and steel and funded entirely through private contributions and partnerships, requiring no financial commitment from the City of Madison.

“We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported this vision. We can’t wait to see families, visitors, and residents creating memories around a destination that truly celebrates what makes Madison such a special place to call home,” Hearne said.

Project organizers expect to announce a groundbreaking date in August, with completion anticipated this fall.
