Modifications will improve safety on Alabama Highway 20 near Muscle Shoals

MUSCLE SHOALS — Work to improve safety on Alabama Highway 20 at Gargis Lane in Colbert County will begin next week.

ALDOT advises motorists to expect daily single-lane closures on Highway 20 in either direction near the intersection southeast of Muscle Shoals.

The $578,374 project with contractor Rogers Group will make several modifications to the intersection. These include changing the north leg of Gargis Lane to allow only right turns in and right turns out.

Motorists traveling east from Gargis Lane southbound will turn right, then make a U-turn at a median crossover west of the intersection.

Instead of turning left, motorists bound for Gargis Lane northbound from Highway 20 eastbound will make a U-turn at a median crossover east of the intersection.

Other modifications include channelizing turns to and from the south leg of Gargis Lane and adding an acceleration lane on Highway 20 westbound.

ALDOT anticipates substantial completion of the project this year.
