Off The Record: The latest rumors and rumblings in Alabama
Moore looking more likely?
U.S. Rep. Barry Moore is “seriously considering” running for U.S. Senate. The congressman tells OTR he and his family are praying about the decision. Attorney General Steve Marshall is thus far considered the frontrunner in the race to fill outgoing Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s seat. But that could quickly change if Moore enters the race. We’ve mentioned it before but if President Trump were to endorse in this race, it’s very likely he would choose Moore, a longtime ally.
Alabama in Paris
North Alabama business leaders and elected officials made the trip across the pond to the Paris Airshow this week. The north Alabama group has been attending the show since the early ’90s and has been joined by groups from Birmingham and Mobile in recent years. On Sunday, the group hosted a reception for aerospace executives that featured an appearance by Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy. The remainder of the week was spent meeting with companies interested in doing business in Alabama as fighter jets and commercial aircraft roared overhead.
Athens mayors race
Last week we checked out the campaign finance reports in the Madison mayor’s race but what about Athens? According to campaign finance reports filed with the Alabama Secretary of State’s office, businessman Danny Whitfield is leading the way in fundraising amounts and contributors over Mayor Ronnie Marks. So far, Whitfield has raised $15,496.48 with 19 contributors. Marks has raised $7,200 with four contributors, including himself. The Athens municipal election is Aug. 26.
Not a meltdown
If you happen to see a buzz of activity around Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant next week, not to worry it’s all part of a training exercise. Numerous responders will be on hand to participate in an emergency preparedness exercise. The exercise is part of ongoing training to ensure an effective and coordinated response in the unlikely event of an emergency. Browns Ferry is TVA’s first and largest nuclear power plant.
