A series of patriotic events spanning more than two months will soon begin in Lawrence County, as community leaders prepare to commemorate both local veterans and the nation’s 250th birthday.

Organized by American Legion Post 25, the initiative will run from early May through the Fourth of July, featuring public displays, ceremonies and family-centered events across the city.

Organizers say the effort is designed to honor military service while bringing the community together in a shared celebration of American history and sacrifice.

“It is often said that freedom is not free,” said event organizer Phil Terry. “Many veterans have given so much so that we may continue to live with pride, honor and freedom. This celebration is a way to remember their sacrifice while strengthening community spirit.”

The schedule begins May 4, when 250 American flags will be placed along Highway 157, a central corridor through Moulton, in recognition of the nation’s 250th anniversary. On May 9, organizers will install 106 white crosses at the American Legion field, each bearing the name of a Lawrence County service member who died in the line of duty.

A community gathering titled “One Nation Under God: 250 Years of Valor” is planned for May 17 at 2:30 p.m. at H.A. Alexander Park Recreation Center. The non-denominational event will include music, prayer and reflection and is open to the public.

Additional events include a Flag Day observance on June 19 at 10 a.m. on the Moulton square, along with citywide decorations such as veteran banners and red, white and blue bunting displayed throughout the duration of the celebration.

The series will conclude July 4 with a free, family-friendly picnic at H.A. Alexander Park from 11 a.m. until dusk. Activities are expected to include traditional games, live music and food trucks, followed by a fireworks display.

Organizers say the extended schedule reflects both the significance of the national milestone and the community’s commitment to honoring those who have served.

Terry added, “Patriotism is alive and well in our community. We invite everyone to join us as we celebrate our nation’s birthday and remember those who made it possible.”
