ATHENS — Three cities in North Alabama have landed on the “World Atlas” “8 Most Charming Town Squares In Alabama” list.
The town squares of Athens, Mentone and Florence encapsulated what the online geographical resource described as “… a common thread of friendly locals, cultural attractions, and a diverse mix of vintage architecture that adds sophistication to match the Southern hospitality.”
Noting Athens’ “throwback ambiance,” they write that “Athens Main Street is the vibrant hub of Limestone County,” praising its tree-lined streets, eclectic dining, and small-town charm. From antique shops and boutiques to the courthouse square and the sound of passing trains, downtown Athens captures the essence of a classic southern town.
“World Atlas” also gave a well-deserved nod to Florence, naming it one of Alabama’s Most Charming Town Squares.
They write that historic downtown Florence is “a shopper’s dream,” highlighting its boutiques, antique shops, and the flagship Billy Reid store on Court Street. The article praises the area’s cultural vibrancy, from the Shoals Community Theatre to the W.C. Handy Music Festival, and points to the 360 Grille, Alabama’s only rotating restaurant, as a standout in the city’s diverse culinary scene. With river views and rich musical heritage, Florence truly earns its spot on the list.
Mentone is praised for its blend of natural beauty, artistic heritage, and mountain-town charm. While perhaps not a traditional “town square,” Mentone’s downtown area, with its shops, galleries, and restaurants, provides a central hub for visitors and residents alike.
“World Atlas” writes that the scenic downtown draws visitors from all over, with a history rooted in its early 20th-century artists’ colony. That creative spirit lives on at places such as Rocky Top Pottery and the Mentone Arts Center, which shares a space with Elevation Bistro. Perched atop Lookout Mountain, Mentone offers a peaceful escape and a truly one-of-a-kind destination in North Alabama.
Rounding out the list of “8 Most Charming Town Squares In Alabama” are Fairhope, Eufaula, Troy, Enterprise, and Marion. The recognition of Athens, Florence, and Mentone highlights North Alabama’s appeal as a top travel destination, with historic downtowns and charming town squares that celebrate the region’s rich culture, scenic beauty, and Southern hospitality.
