North Alabama senators gain committee assignments, leadership roles

MONTGOMERY — The Alabama Senate leadership announced committee assignments for the next legislative session beginning in March. Several senators from North Alabama have made their way onto those committees and several others have leadership roles.

In a rule change approved Wednesday during the Legislature’s organizational session, the size of several committees was expanded.

“I want to thank my colleagues and Senate leadership for their collaboration in the Senate Standing Committee assignment process,” said Senate President Pro Tem Greg Reed (R-Jasper) in a written statement. “I know the committee chairs, vice chairs, and members will render valuable service to the legislative procedure as a whole and to the State of Alabama.”

Sen. Sam Givhan of Huntsville was assigned vice chair of the Committee on Judiciary, and he will also serve on the Committee on Rules; the Committee on Finance and Taxation General Fund; the Committee on Confirmations; the Committee on Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development; the Committee on Healthcare; and the Committee on Veterans, Military Affairs and Public Safety.

Sen. Arthur Orr of Decatur will chair the Committee on Finance and Taxation Education and will serve on the Committee on Finance and Taxation General Fund; the Committee of the Judiciary; the Committee on Rules; and the Committee on Governmental Affairs – State.

Sen. Steve Livingston of Scottsboro is chairing the Committee on Confirmations and serving on the Committee on Finance and Taxation General Fund; the Committee on Finance and Taxation Education; the Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry; the Committee on Banking and Insurance; the Committee on Transportation and Energy; and the Committee on Tourism.

Sen. Tom Butler of Madison will chair the Committee on Governmental Affairs – State and vice chair the Committee on Transportation and Energy. He will also serve on the Committee on Finance and Taxation Education; the Committee on Education Policy; the Committee on Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development; and the Committee on Healthcare.

Sen. Tim Melson of Florence is serving on the Committee on Finance and Taxation Education; the Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry; and the Committee on Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development, and the Committee on Healthcare

Sen. Clay Scofield of Guntersville has been assigned vice chair of the Rules Committee and the Committee on Local Legislation. He is also a member of the Committee on Finance and Taxation Education; the Committee on Banking and Insurance; and the Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.

Sen. Garlan Gudger of Cullman will chair the Committee on Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development and serve on the Committee on Finance and Taxation Education; the Committee on Confirmations; the Committee on Governmental Affairs – Local; the Committee on Education Policy; and the Committee on Tourism.

The only committee without North Alabama representation is the Committee on Children and Youth Healthcare.

House committee assignments will be announced Friday.
