Part of I-59 in Etowah and DeKalb counties to close Friday for repairs

COLLINSVILLE — Motorists on I-59 in northern Etowah County and southern DeKalb County will face a detour of nearly 20 miles Friday.

The Alabama Department of Transportation announced 17 miles of the interstate between Exit 188 at Reece City and Exit 205 at Collinsville will be closed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for repairs.

Traffic will be diverted to U.S. 11 as a detour.

A significant segment of the southbound roadway between Reece City and Collinsville is being reconstructed by contractor Vulcan Materials. During the project, both directions of traffic have been sharing the northbound roadway.

For the contractor to make needed repairs to the northbound roadway, ALDOT must close I-59.

Additionally, ALDOT will make repairs to the end of the northbound bridge over Stevens Gap Road during the closure.

Official detour route

  • Northbound traffic will detour at Exit 188 to Alabama Highway 211 northbound to U.S. 11 northbound to Alabama Highway 68 westbound, then back to I-59 at Exit 205.
  • Southbound traffic will detour at Exit 205 to Highway 68 eastbound to U.S. 11 southbound to Highway211 southbound, then back to I-59 at Exit 188.

The $40.7 million project to reconstruct more than 10 miles of the southbound roadway began last spring. ALDOT anticipates completion in spring 2027.

On Dec. 5, ALDOT opened bids for another project to replace and rehabilitate part of I-59 in DeKalb County. That project is expected to push the total of contracts for the reconstruction of I-59 in Etowah and DeKalb counties to nearly $240 million.
