Put on your walking shoes! Free historic downtown Huntsville and Madison walking tours return in April

Just in time to inspire both locals and visitors alike to get outdoors and enjoy warmer weather, the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) has revived its guided, historic district walking tours for 2022. The spring tours highlight the stories behind two of the area’s many historic districts.

Saturday, April 2 and April 9, the tours explore downtown Huntsville’s Twickenham Historic District and Saturday, April 16 and April 23, they investigate the Downtown Madison Historic District.

Led by Huntsville preservation planner Katie Stamps and CVB convention services manager, Van Brown, the Twickenham walking tours leave from Alabama Constitution Hall Park at 109 Gates Avenue in downtown Huntsville. Twickenham, Old Town and Five Points are listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to their significance in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering and culture.

The Historic Downtown Madison walking tours depart from the Little Roundhouse gazebo in the center of downtown along Front Street and will be led by Madison City Schools bookkeeper, Cindi Sanderson, and former Madison City Councilman Gerald Clark.

The tours are free, and no reservations are required. Leashed pets and strollers are welcome. Walkers should dress comfortably and bring snacks, water, sunscreen and other items as needed.

All walking tours depart at 10 a.m. and each tour lasts roughly 1.5 hours.

In the event of inclement weather, the CVB will announce cancellations prior to the tour’s departure via social media. There will be no replacement date scheduled.

Free walking tours exploring Alabama’s past were initiated statewide by the Alabama Tourism Department in 2003 to foster the exploration of Alabama’s history and culture, especially in downtown areas.
