Redstone Arsenal launches Recreational Badge Program for public access to select MWR facilities

Members of the public can now enjoy select recreational facilities at Redstone Arsenal through a new Recreational Badge Program designed to provide limited access while maintaining the installation’s security requirements.

The program, announced by Redstone Arsenal Garrison, allows individuals who do not work on the installation to visit designated Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) facilities after completing a background check and obtaining a recreational badge.

Officials said the initiative is intended to strengthen community engagement while ensuring access remains limited to approved recreational areas.

“The REC badge gives individuals access to outdoor recreational opportunities on the installation, but it’s important to understand it comes with specific limitations,” said Stephanie Stone, marketing and special events manager for the Community Recreation Division.

The recreational badge provides access to several MWR locations, including:

  • Weeden Mountain Grill, located at The Links at Redstone
  • The Links at Redstone Golf Course
  • Redstone Lanes Bowling Center
  • The Strike Zone restaurant inside Redstone Lanes
  • Java Café
  • Designated walking, biking and hiking trails
  • Select parks and pavilions

To obtain a recreational badge, applicants must visit the Visitor Control Center at Gate 9 on Rideout Road, present valid identification and request access under the recreational program. All applicants are subject to a standard background check before a badge is issued.

The Visitor Control Center is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The new program expands opportunities for area residents to enjoy portions of Redstone Arsenal’s recreational amenities, which also include fitness centers, an aquatics center, outdoor recreation programs and an RV park. However, those facilities remain restricted to authorized users unless otherwise permitted under the recreational badge program.

Redstone Arsenal officials said the recreational badge only authorizes access to approved MWR facilities and does not permit entry into other areas of the installation.

Additional information is available through the Visitor Control Center at Gate 9.
