Redstone Arsenal officials say the upcoming closure of Gate 3 is intended to be temporary as the installation works through unexpected security staffing shortages that have forced changes to gate operations.
According to a notice posted on the official Team Redstone Facebook page, Gate 3 on Redstone Road will close to all traffic beginning July 6.
Installation officials said the decision was driven by “significant, unforeseen personnel losses” within the Department of the Army Security Guard force, combined with hiring limitations that have made it difficult to quickly replace those employees.
The announcement drew attention online, generating hundreds of reactions and more than 100 comments in two hours, many expressing concerns about traffic impacts and longer commute times for workers who rely on the south Huntsville entrance.

A Redstone Arsenal public affairs spokesman told 256 Today the closure is not expected to be permanent.
“It’s just temporary,” the spokesperson said. “We’ll resolve it as quickly as possible.”
The staffing challenges stem largely from employee departures and normal workforce attrition.
“We had some resignations due to different things, hired away by other organizations, all sorts of things,” she said.
Officials declined to estimate when Gate 3 might reopen, saying they do not want to speculate on a timeline while recruitment efforts continue.
The arsenal is currently hiring additional security guards to help address the staffing shortfall according to the official.
While Redstone officials were unable to provide a daily traffic count specifically for Gate 3, the spokesman said more than 46,000 commuters enter and exit the arsenal each day, stressing the potential impact of losing one of the installation’s access points.
Gate 3 is located on Redstone Road SW and connects directly to South Memorial Parkway, serving as a key entry point for employees and contractors traveling from south Huntsville and surrounding areas.
Officials said the closure will not take effect until July 6 in part to give commuters time to adjust their travel plans and allow workforce scheduling changes to be implemented.
In its public announcement, Team Redstone said the installation remains committed to restoring Gate 3 operations as soon as possible.
“We are committed to restoring Gate 3 operations as soon as possible,” the post stated.
Redstone Arsenal is one of Alabama’s largest employment centers, supporting military, civilian and contractor operations across a wide range of Army, space and missile defense missions. The installation’s workforce includes tens of thousands of employees spread across more than 38,000 acres in Madison County.
